Angelica Root • Blue Cohosh Valerian Root • Black Cohosh • Pennyroyal • Cramp Bark
Angelica Root
Nicknamed the “female ginseng” because of its benefits for women, angelica root (also called ‘dong quai’) has been used for centuries in Asia as a women’s tonic and for alleviating PMS, menstrual cramps, and symptoms related to menopause. It has many properties that help alleviate symptoms of PMS. For starters, angelica can help suppress muscle spasms, relax muscles (including the uterus ), reduce pain and dilate blood vessels. Because of its muscle relaxing effect, it is can be useful for menstrual cramping or discomfort. It is also used to restore menstrual cycles in the absence of menstruation, especially after stopping the use of contraceptive pills. In addition, angelica root:
- Helps balance estrogen levels.
- Helps balance iron levels by increasing the hemoglobin content of the blood.
- Is effective at reducing anxiety and could be useful to help you combat stress and reduce the severity of mood swings.
- Increases circulation, improves complexion, and aids detoxification.
Blue Cohosh
Blue cohosh is an herb known for helping with symptoms of a menstrual cycle. One active ingredient in blue cohosh, caulophyllosaponin, stimulates uterine contractions and increases blood flow to the pelvic area. This makes the herb effective in relieving menstrual cramps. Most women experience mild to severe cramping every month as a result of their monthly cycles. Women who suffer from cramps most often suffer from other symptoms as well: lower back pain, pinching in inner thighs, nausea, vomiting, faintness, dizziness, migraines, and bloating. Another component, caulosaponin, may help ease those symptoms as well.
Blue cohosh is also used to help tone the smooth muscle lining of the urinary tract in cases of urinary incontinence. This helps to strengthen the urinary tract and improve bladder control.
Valerian Root
Valerian root’s main action for helping alleviate symptoms of menstruation and menopause would be its effect on the central nervous system, as it has a tranquilizing effect without sedating. Its effect on the central nervous system is normalizing, thus if you are anxious or agitated, it has a calming effect. Valerian is very helpful for alleviating the anxiety, mood swings, restlessness, nervousness, mental strain, sleep disturbance, lack of concentration, excitability, stress, headache, uterine spasticity, and any pain, discomfort, or emotional distress that may occur with either menstruation or menopause.
Black Cohosh
- Eases symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, melancholy, irritability, and cramps by balancing hormone function in the body.
- Is beneficial for relieving menstrual cramps and encouraging blood flow.
- Contains anti-inflammatory properties, which relieves aches and pains.
Pennyroyal
A member of the mint family, pennyroyal has many uses. It can help relieve the cramps, pain, stress or anxiety that usually accompanies menstruation. But Is Pennyroyal Safe?
There are fears about pennyroyal saftey, but the herb itself is not dangerous or lethal at any dose you could reasonably take. However, the essential oil of pennyroyal is highly toxic. In fact, as little as 1/2 teaspoon of the essential oil can cause convulsions and coma! But that’s the equivalent of about 20 gallons of strong tea consumed over a period of a few hours!! And 20 gallons of any kind of tea would have serious adverse effects (as would even a fraction of a teaspoon of most herbal essential oils). In our FemDrops, we use whole pennyroyal herb and make it into a “tincture” which is a mild and safe way to consume this herb.
Cramp Bark
Cramp bark, as the name suggests, is useful anywhere there is muscular tension or cramps, making it a great remedy for menstrual pain and cramping. It is a smooth (autonomic) and skeletal muscle relaxant, which makes it specifically helpful for pain and cramps in the ovaries and uterus. Some of the active constituents in cramp bark have an anti-inflammatory effect that help to reduce pain associated with cramping. In addition, it may help to flush excess fluids from the body by stimulating the kidneys and bladder, helping to relieve fluid retention and bloating.
WARNING: This product should NOT be used by pregnant women as it can stimulate the uterus to contract, potentially harming the baby.
